Abstract
Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed experimental diet, and also were orally administered with yoghurt prepared with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for 5 weeks. Effects of 0,1% and 0.5% DHA-added yoghurts on body weight gain, food and energy intakes, triglyceride and body fat contents, total and LDL-cholesterol levels, atherogenic index, hydroxyl radical and malondialdehyde levels, and scavenger enzymes of rats were evaluated, Body weight gain were significantly inhibited about 15-25% by administration of DHA-added yoghurts compared with control group after 5 weeks (p<0.001). Decreases of food and energy intakes showed a similar trend to their body weight gains. Administration of 0.5% DHA-added yoghurt only resulted in a marked decrease of about 25% and 20% in serum triglyceride LDL-cholesterol levels, respectively after 5 weeks(p<0.001). Serum total cholesterol and body fat contents estimated by T.M. index significantly decreased in 20-30% and 25-35% in DHA-added yoghurt groups(p<0.001), and 0.5% DHA-added yoghurt group only resulted in significant inhibition of above 10%. 0.5% DHA-yoghurt group only resulted in marked inhibition of about 20% and 15% in free radical and malondialdehyde levels, respectively. There were no significant differences in superoxide dismutase activity in DHA-added yoghurt groups, but slightly increased compared with control group. These results suggest that administration of DHA-added yoghurt effectively not only can inhibit obesity, but also can intervent chronic degenerative disease and aging process.
